Elmhurst Farm - Free Range

About Us
Trudie and Ian Townsend are proud to share with you the product of their hard work and determination. Elmhurst Farm, is an idyllic smallholding set in 24 acres of West Sussex countryside specialising in the raising of free range meat. Having carefully selected breeds renound for ‘best flavour’, Elmhurst Farm provides the livestock with the perfect home in which to thrive throughout the year.

The Free Range Pork Meat Box Scheme
Our pedigree traditional breed pigs spend a completely free range life, traditionally matured - the way it used to be. Only 60 years ago all pigs were organic! The pork we sell is sold in 10Kg boxes of a variety of succulent hand selected joints and cuts. A typical 'box' will hold around 6.5kg of roasting joints, 1.5kg of chops and leg steaks and 2kg of mince, dice and belly pork.

The ingredients

The small print, but bigger
It goes without saying, well perhaps not, but at Elmhurst we grow the sort of produce that we want to eat, and because our 'small print' makes such reassuring reading, we would like to present it to you as big print!:

• Our meat contains no added water, no added colour, no added flavorings, no preservatives, actually no additives whatsoever
• Our animals are slow growing traditional breeds, who eat natural food containing no growth promoters, no hormones, no antibiotics and no meat derivatives.
• In the case of our sheep flock and beef herd, their diet is almost entirely of grass, which grows in our fields without any chemical interference.
• Traceability - all produce sold is from animals born and reared on the farm (chickens are slightly different - they are delivered to us on the day that they hatch!) We have very carefully selected the local abattoir and the butcher who complete the team. In addition to this very small loop there is you, collecting your produce, and if you would like to, looking over the farm and reconnecting with farm animals.

Animal Welfare
Our animals all lead natural free range lives. They have plenty of room to move. They live in family groups, in particular the pigs, because they are not confined in a commercial 'factory' barn, they do not have their teeth cut, their tails docked, they are not castrated,, they do not have rings though their noses. Our animals live in a stress free environment where we use good old fashioned time as a growth factor not artificial accelerators, to allow the animal to develop naturally.
